“Sovereignty Day” in Iraq

Our troops take a step closer toward withdrawal. Today, most US troops have withdrawn from major Iraqi cities (with the exception of a few American troops who will remain embedded with Iraqi forces in the cities for advisory purposes) — although still acutely aware of danger and heightened security, Iraqis are also celebrating this step toward returning the control of Iraq to its inhabitants. This Tuesday has been dubbed a holiday, “Sovereignty Day“.

The US military will now have a more limited role, as they begin turning over power to the Iraqis (for instance, the US military will need approval for combat missions from Baghdad and will need a warrant to search and detain), though they are ready to return to the cities if called upon.
